Call For Format Festival 2011 Projects
Format Festival, 11th – 27th February 2011
Due Date Project Proposals – 1st November 2010

Format is a two week festival of DIY, artist run projects and participatory culture. In 2011, we’ll be operating out of two venues – Format Space at 15 Peel St and Magazine Gallery on Clubhouse Lane.

If you’ve got art, music, film, publications, walking tours, weird stuff, performances, lectures, ideas for workshops or whatever else, and you’d like to expose it to the good people of Adelaide, please send us 1 A4 page at including information about your proposed project, what kind of space would best suit it, and your technical requirements.

Label your application “FORMAT 2011 PROPOSAL” and if possible include some relevant images of previous art/projects/whatever you’ve been involved in.

Format is able to provide the venue, basic lighting and equipment, catering and awesome ‘party good times’ crowds. Unfortunately as our budget is as yet unconfirmed, we cannot guarantee you artist fees yet – it’s DIY in the worst sense of the word. We look forward to hearing your ideas!

The Format Collective Inc.

Want to design Format Festival’s 2011 Poster? Sure you do! Format is holding a diorama-poster competition to choose our 2011 poster image. This is how it works:
1) Anyone can enter. Anyone can vote for their favourite poster.
2) To enter, make and photograph the diorama you’d like to see on the Format Festival poster. It could have anything in it – miniature people, mountains, the ocean, knives, live wolves. For an example of a great diorama see the above image of our Christmas in July Diorama-Poster designed by Stephanie Lyall.
3) Remember to include in your diorama at a reasonable scale the Format logo (available for download here), the dates of the festival (11th – 27th February), and our address (15 Peel St, just off Hindley). We’ll take care of the rest…
4) To enter your diorama, add a comment to the wall of this event and  attach an image of your diorama. Or email your entry to
5) The four dioramas with the most *Like*s will be used as the Format Festival 2011 posters. If you don’t have facebook and would like to vote, let us know at The winners will be asked to provide their diorama for professional photographing. ALL dioramas entered in the competition will be featured in an exhibition at the opening night of Format Festival 2011, so hang onto your dioramas!
6) Make sure to press *like* for your favourite dioramas! You are allowed to vote for more than one.

Come along this Friday night for a triple threat exhibition opening at Format. We will be open late so feel free to drop by after nine for cheap drinks. Three shows will open – one’s got four sharp art-school ladies, one’s about Australia’s favourite election beef – immigration, and one’s a first solo show of abstract work from Keith Lord. PLUS an installation by Elle Freak in project space The Changeroom. For those conscientious readers, more information on each of these shows can be found here

Hope to see you there

2. Collect: opens 14th July at 6pm – 6pm, running until 28th July

Every person that walks past as you stand still in the street has a collected history; stories, insecurities, failures, loves, passions, vivid and fading memories. Objects, places, cracks witness time passing and have been present or affected by events, some profound and some unnoticed. Found in the streets and in periods of introspection about conversations and observations, this installation of images, objects and sounds at Format are an arrangement of found and collected material with inherent histories and scars that shape the present.

So Format: Winterfest is over, but it’s still cold – it’s not even the depths of Winter yet, Format, geez…

We agree.

So come along to our Christmas in July Market day.

The venue will be filled with bakers, creators, and candlestick makers. But most importantly, mulled wine and a forest of Christmas trees.

We want to shamelessly transport you to the Northern Hemisphere, with fogged up windows, steaming drinks, festive cheer, and rosy cheeks.

If YOU’D like to participate, please email
by the 16th of July (get your advent calendars out)
stating your wares and to get more details

We welcome food, clothes, radical craft, drink – basically anything you’d find at a Winter Christmas market. Google them if you’ve never been.

This is also another fundraising event to get us to the real Christmas.

So help out by selling – or buying!
